OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT search, an advanced version of its earlier SearchGPT prototype released this summer. Integrated into the ChatGPT platform, this feature is designed to provide users with effective answers to their queries. Powered by a fine-tuned GPT-4o model, ChatGPT search delivers information and images from the web, complete with links to relevant sources. Users can refine their searches by asking follow-up questions.
The system can automatically decide when to search the web based on your query, or you can manually initiate a search by clicking the new web search icon. Results include both responses in the dialog box and sidebar attributions to data sources. Initially, ChatGPT search will be available to ChatGPT Plus and Team users on mobile and web platforms. Enterprise and educational customers will gain access in the coming weeks, followed by free users.
Some publishers have raised concerns that AI-generated summaries like ChatGPT search and Google's AI Overviews could divert traffic away from their websites. OpenAI states that it has considered feedback from publishing partners regarding how ChatGPT search selects relevant articles, determines summary lengths, and uses quotations.
