Shopify has rolled out Canvas, a desktop workspace that lets merchants design and customize e-commerce storefronts through direct conversation with an AI assistant. Operating as an extension of the platform's Sidekick agent, the tool converts natural language chat prompts into layout adjustments and design modifications. This conversational setup provides store owners with a unified visual view of their entire site architecture, allowing them to adjust individual pages or manage the overall storefront structure without navigating traditional settings menus.

The system processes design requests by rendering actual storefront code in real time rather than generating static image mockups. Users can interact directly with page elements, evaluate interactive animations, and verify responsive design layouts across various screen sizes while the assistant executes changes.

Canvas is currently available on desktop web browsers for account staff with code-editing privileges on eligible customization plans. The initial release focuses on core site-building features, while capabilities such as third-party theme support, application blocks, multi-language translations, international market configurations, and theme updates are scheduled for inclusion in future platform developments.
