OpenAI has introduced GPT-5.1, an upgraded version of its GPT-5 series. It adds more adaptive reasoning, improved conversational quality and stronger task performance.
The model is released in two variants: Instant and Thinking. Instant provides fast, natural interactions with a friendlier tone and better instruction adherence. Thinking allocates deeper reasoning time and dynamically adjusts computational effort to deliver more thorough results on complex tasks.
GPT-5.1 also brings automatic model routing. ChatGPT now determines whether Instant or Thinking is better suited for the user's request, reducing the need for manual selection. The rollout begins with paid users, and previous GPT-5 models remain available for a three-month transition period before being fully deprecated.
For developers, GPT-5.1 includes several significant upgrades. Its adaptive reasoning engine can scale up or down depending on the complexity of the prompt. A new low-latency no-reasoning mode provides faster responses when deep analysis is unnecessary. The update also introduces two new capabilities: the apply_patch tool for precise code editing and an enhanced shell tool that executes command-line operations directly through the model.
Altogether, GPT-5.1 is positioned as a meaningful leap forward. It delivers better customization, smarter reasoning patterns, and a more intuitive user experience for both everyday ChatGPT users and developers.
