OpenAI has unveiled GPT-4.1, the successor to their GPT-4o multimodal AI model released last year. The company reports that the new model surpasses its predecessor with significant enhancements to coding capabilities and instruction following accuracy.
The release includes three variants: the standard GPT-4.1, a more affordable GPT-4.1 mini, and an ultra-lightweight GPT-4.1 nano version. All three models feature an impressive one million token context window, representing a substantial increase from GPT-4o's 128,000-token limit.
According to OpenAI's announcement, GPT-4.1 was specifically trained to effectively process information across its entire extended context length. The company emphasized that the model demonstrates superior ability to identify relevant information while disregarding distractions throughout various context lengths.
OpenAI additionally announced plans to deprecate the GPT-4.5 in the API, explaining that GPT-4.1 delivers comparable or better performance across key capabilities while requiring fewer resources and offering reduced latency. The company is also preparing to release the complete version of its o3 reasoning model along with an o4 mini reasoning model in the near future.
