OpenAI has decided to cancel the release of its o3 AI model in favor of a more streamlined approach. Instead, the company will integrate o3’s capabilities into GPT-5, the next-generation model set to launch in the coming months.

CEO Sam Altman stated that GPT-5 will unify various OpenAI technologies, simplifying its AI ecosystem. This shift means o3 will not be released as a standalone model. Altman emphasized OpenAI’s commitment to reducing complexity in its product lineup. The company aims to eliminate the need for manual model selection in ChatGPT, replacing it with a seamless AI experience.

Once available, GPT-5 will offer unrestricted chat access at a standard intelligence level, with limitations to prevent abuse. ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers will gain access to more advanced intelligence tiers. The model will also feature voice interaction, search, deep research, and a unified tool set for enhanced usability.

Before GPT-5 launches, OpenAI plans to release GPT-4.5, code-named “Orion,” in the coming weeks. This will be OpenAI’s last non-reasoning-based model, as the company fully transitions to self-verifying reasoning models. These models improve accuracy but require additional processing time.

The move follows increased competition from China’s DeepSeek, whose R1 model matches OpenAI’s earlier reasoning models and is freely available. Acknowledging this challenge, Altman indicated that OpenAI is accelerating certain releases to stay ahead.
