Microsoft has unveiled a new lineup of AI models focused on advanced reasoning capabilities, further expanding its lightweight Phi series. This release features three models — Phi-4 Mini Reasoning, Phi-4 Reasoning, and Phi-4 Reasoning Plus — each engineered for high efficiency and strong problem-solving capabilities.
The Phi-4 Mini Reasoning model, compact with 3.8 billion parameters, was trained on one million synthetic math problems created using DeepSeek's R1 model. Microsoft sees it as ideal for educational tools like embedded tutors on low-resource devices. Although compact, it delivers strong analytical capabilities.
Phi-4 Reasoning, featuring 14 billion parameters, is positioned as a versatile model for math, science, and coding tasks. It was trained with high-quality web content and curated examples, including those from OpenAI’s o3-mini. According to Microsoft, this model delivers competitive accuracy while remaining accessible for developers deploying at the edge.
Phi-4 Reasoning Plus represents an upgraded version of Microsoft’s original Phi-4, enhanced to tackle reasoning tasks with greater precision. Though much smaller in scale than DeepSeek’s 671-billion-parameter R1 model, it nearly matches its accuracy on select benchmarks. Internal tests also show it performs on par with OpenAI’s o3-mini on the OmniMath exam.
Microsoft emphasized that these models were built using techniques like distillation, reinforcement learning, and high-quality datasets to balance compact size with advanced reasoning. All three models are now available with documentation on Hugging Face, targeting developers who need powerful yet efficient AI tools for low-latency environments.
