ESPN has started using AI to generate recaps for soccer games, with plans to expand to other sports. Powered by Microsoft AI, the stories are written automatically, with human editors checking for quality and accuracy. ESPN claims this approach is meant to “augment” rather than replace its traditional content.

This isn't a new concept, as The Associated Press has been using AI to generate sports recaps since 2016. Both organizations highlight AI as a tool to cover less-publicized sports like soccer and lacrosse more efficiently.

However, the AI-generated recaps have been criticized for being too simplistic, lacking important nuances and emotional depth. For example, one National Women’s Soccer League recap overlooked a key player's final game and the significance of that moment.

Despite these early criticisms, ESPN believes AI recaps will free up writers to focus on more in-depth stories. The network plans to expand AI-generated content across more sports in the future, with soccer and lacrosse serving as initial test cases.
