Anthropic has unveiled Cowork, a new agentic tool designed as a simpler and more approachable alternative to Claude Code. Integrated into the Claude Desktop app for macOS, Cowork allows users to give Claude controlled access to a selected folder, where it can read, edit, or create files through instructions provided in a standard chat interface.
Unlike regular conversations, Cowork operates with higher autonomy. After receiving a task, Claude plans and executes a sequence of actions while keeping the user informed. Built on the same Claude Agent SDK as Claude Code, Cowork integrates connectors for external data, includes skills for creating documents and presentations, and supports optional browser-based workflows when paired with Claude in Chrome. The approach enables complex, multi-step tasks without requiring command-line tools or technical setup, making the tool accessible to non-developers.
Currently offered in research preview mode for Claude Max subscribers, Cowork gives users control over which folders and connectors Claude can access. Anthropic cautions that unclear instructions may lead to unintended actions and notes that risks such as prompt injection remain an active area of development. The company plans further improvements and expanded access across the platform later on.
