At the re:Invent conference, Amazon Web Services (AWS) introduced Nova, a groundbreaking series of multimodal AI models. The collection features four text-oriented models: Micro, Lite, Pro, and Premier. While the first three are currently available to users, Premier is expected to launch in early 2025. Alongside these, AWS also debuted Nova Canvas for creating images and Nova Reel for generating videos, both of which are now accessible.
Each Nova model serves distinct purposes. Micro processes only text with the fastest response time. Lite handles text, images, and videos efficiently. Pro strikes a balance between speed, accuracy, and cost, suitable for varied tasks, while Premier is designed for advanced workloads and creating tailored AI solutions. These models support extensive context windows, with capabilities expected to expand to over 2 million tokens by 2025.
Canvas and Reel further broaden Nova’s potential. Canvas generates and edits images, while Reel produces six-second videos from prompts or reference images. Longer videos are expected soon. Both tools integrate safety measures like watermarking and content moderation to prevent misuse.
In AWS’s roadmap, a speech-to-speech model is planned for early 2025, along with an "any-to-any" model set to debut mid-year. The speech-to-speech model will analyze both verbal and nonverbal signals, such as tone and rhythm, to generate speech that sounds natural and human-like. Meanwhile, the "any-to-any" model aims to seamlessly convert between text, speech, images, and video, opening new possibilities for translation, content creation, and AI-powered tools.
