Perplexity has made its AI-powered Comet browser free for global users, expanding access beyond its premium Max subscribers. The company aims to compete with dominant players like Google Chrome and newcomers such as The Browser Company’s Dia. Initially launched three months ago for $200-per-month Max customers, Comet quickly generated significant interest, with millions joining a waitlist.

Comet’s defining feature is a sidecar assistant that supports users while browsing. It can summarize pages, answer questions, manage content, and help with navigation. Alongside this, free users also gain access to specialized tools such as Discover for personalized news, Spaces for project organization, and Shopping for price comparisons. They can also use Travel for trip planning, Finance for expense tracking, and Sports for real-time updates.

Max subscribers, however, receive exclusive benefits, including higher-performing AI models, an advanced email assistant, and early access to experimental features. Among these is a newly introduced “background assistant” that can perform multiple tasks simultaneously, from drafting emails to booking flights. Its progress can be monitored from a central dashboard.

Perplexity’s strategy highlights its push to position Comet as more than just a browser. By offering agent-like functionality, the company hopes to demonstrate clear productivity gains. This could persuade users to switch from established platforms, especially as rivals like OpenAI prepare to launch their own AI-driven browsers.
